Give Away is almost here!

Tag: Block of Month,Free Patterns,Garden & FlowersCarol Britt @ 11:01 am

Two more days before we draw four lucky winners of a Girl in the Garden pattern by Pat Sloan and Bigfork Bay Cotton Company.

We love these designs in batik and will kit just as they were made.  We are waiting for a couple more bolts to arrive.  The kits should ship mid March.

Want them all?  Sign up for our Wall hanging of the Month starting in April and get one kit a month for four months.  Sign up here.

Make a comment on this blog to be entered in the pattern give away.

Your responses have been so much fun.  So here’s a new question:

What is the most unusual flower in your garden?

Mine would have to be the Seven Sons tree.

It blooms in late August into September and has a delightful fragrance.

The pink flowers become fuchsia and a berry forms at the center that is a shiny purple.

Very interesting.

New Batik Block of the Month

Tag: Batik Cotton,Block of Month,Shop NewsCarol Britt @ 12:08 pm

Roses of Remberance is our new Block of the Month that starts shipping in March, 2011.  It runs for 13 months and finishes 63″ x 63″.   This block of the month is a result of a rose of sharon applique pattern contest from Electric Quilt.  There were 850 entries from 11 countries.  Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims selected the winning 12 blocks and Sharon Pederson designed the 13th block. Many companies have become involved in this block of the month and donations are being made to the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.

The quilt features batik from Island Batik and is absolutely gorgeous.  All of the batiks are showing on line.  Other companies involved are Martingale and Company in collaboration with Nine Patch Media produced the book and DVD.  Each offers more of the winning blocks than are included in the block of the month.

The quilt can be appliqued with traditional hand methods, raw edge fusible methods, or with machine embroidery/hoop applique methods.  The machine embroidery/hoop applique methods make smaller blocks and are included on an Embroidery CD or Memory Stick.  We will offer embroidery classes to support the machine/hoop applique methods and the quilt as you go assembly techniques.

Two thread collections are available by Aurifill.  They include gorgeous colors and everyone at the shop LOVES Aurifill thread.  The Embroidery Collection is 40 wt. and is used for machine or hand embroidery.  The Quilting Thread Collection is 50 wt and is for piecing and quilting.

A Stencil Collection by Nine Patch Media includes all the flower and leaf shapes used in the quilt.  What a time saver!

The original quilt was made with a Quilt As You Go method.  Matching threads were used in the bobbin for quilting so the stitching shows the designs on the back.  A contrast sashing on the back creates a quilt in its own right.  We will be offering a class in this technique especially as it relates to this block of the month.   Backing for the quilt is available for the quilt as you go method or as a regular backing.  If you wish to do the quilt as you go technique, buy your backing early in the project.

Wow!  so gorgeous and you get to do a little at a time.  I know I wish I had a project like this going last year when I just wanted to do a little sewing without starting a big project.  You can do your monthly installment and go on to another project.  A good dose of quilting and color.

Beach Walk Block of the Month

Tag: Block of Month,Shop NewsCarol Britt @ 9:42 am

At quilt market McKenna Ryan had her upcoming Block of the Month pinned to a display board.  It was so gorgeous I ordered all the fabric and patterns before they were even ready.  We have just enough info to set the prices and so we are taking pre orders for the Block of the Month.  We hope to start shipping in September depending on fabric deliveries.  The fabrics are printed cotton and batik combined.

This is a 9 month BOM.  It is 59″ x 73″.  Check it out!  We will also have the individual blocks available as separate kits.  We don’t have prices on those yet.  I can’t decide what my favorite block is.  Maybe the boat with the seagulls.  I can hear their calls and feel the soft beach air.

McKenna Ryan's Beach BOM

McKenna Ryan

B-BOM!  Lots of BOM at market.  We found several Batik Block of the Months to start in the coming 6- 8 months.  Let us know which ones you like.

The McKenna Ryan BOM pictured above will start this fall.  It is a combination of McKenna’s new Hoffman prints and batik.  It is stunning.  You are looking at pieces just pinned to a board.  It doesn’t even have a name yet!

Another BOM from McKenna Ryan is Faith, Hope, and Love.  She redid this one in batik from previous printed cotton.  Graceful Continue reading “BOM sneak peak”
