Etc for Batiks Etcetera is lots of printed, gourmet cottons, threads, notions, Pfaff Sewing Machines, art quilt supplies, and etc! Little by little we have been adding other items to the website so we can be a one stop shop. If you get a chance to stop by the shop on your travels, you will be surprised at all the other fabrics we have. Of course, the batiks are overwhelming and ever changing.
Two new groups have arrived that are really fun and great for Holiday giving ideas. Holly Taylor’s new group, Northwoods Botanical has the greatest stripe along the edge of the panel. Robin made great use of the fabrics in our fat quarter pack adding a little more light and created all of these projects. She used Holly Taylor’s book, Northern Botanical. Anna arranged the goodies and took this great photo. I love the notebook cover with the pen pocket on the outside. I might actually be able to find a pen!
Also notice all the great rick rack used. Where do you get it? Why right here on our website!
In town, when people ask where someone got something they say “Down to the Sew What”. I’ve always loved that expression! Sew What Fabrics was our first name before we bought Batiks Etcetera.
Also new is 3 Sisters, Park Avenue from Moda. We have a beautiful kit, fabrics, jelly rolls, charm packs, and a fat 1/8 pack. I love to do 9 patches and the way two sizes are used in this design is brilliant. And 9 patches on point are so much more fun.
Lots of people ask us how we get so much in our little black Batiks Etc trailer. The quick answer is experience and experimenting. Everything has to be in assigned seats. The right size box must intersect with another size box. My dh Marty takes a picture of each row as he packs so we can get everything in the right place on the way home. Too many times, we have had to repack late at night when things don’t fit! Marty prints the photo and puts it in a holder on the back door so we can refer to it.
What we carry can change but the fixtures and boxes must maintain their relationships for all to fit!
Here is a step by step of our last trip.
We also put lots of stuff in the van. That’s where the bolts go. And 3 – 4 great workers! Notice the photo sleeve on the door. Our favorite trip is when Marty goes along. We don’t have to think so hard on pack up when he is with us!
I’m feeling the urge to do a landscape quilt. There are some fantastic batiks just ripe for such a quilt. I use a machine pieced curve technique that results in a softly rolling landscape. It is where I live. Here is an example called Rolling Hills. I combine batik and cotton printed fabrics to get the right effect and gradation of color.

This one is supposed to hang in my office for calmness – if I ever get around to hanging it!
Another example is Down by the Sea. This quilt is owned by one of my sisters. It has batik, batiked lame, printed cotton, and beads. I loved making it.

Several new batiks are scratching my landscape itch right now. They don’t go in the same quilt but they have my imagination working overtime! What do you think?
Laura Murray is one of my favorite designers. She is so classy and has such great ideas. She is best known to quilters for her Paintstiks book and CD. And surprise, surprise we have it!
We also have all of Laura’s stencils and stamps. Her starbuilder is pure genius! It is made with her stamps and is shown behind her. Gorgeous!
Doesn’t this make you want a play day? I have several planned for this summer – I just need the dates….
For more inspiration go to Laura’s website at Laura Murray Designs. Remember we offer Laura’s books, DVD’s, stencils, and stamps. We also have a broad range of paintstiks.
We will have to schedule some paint play classes this summer. I work on the second half of the year class schedule when I return from the next show.
